One of the projects we did this year was a form based project where we designed a form that was meant to evoke a certain feeling (or adjective). The words my monolith describes are sleek and flowing. I’ll probably end up redoing the presentation board-layout for this but for now, here’s the original design.
Monolith - Tricia Flohr
I keep eating these wasabi balls but they are kind of painful so I don’t know why I keep eating them.
(Look at how productive I am at studying!)
Manufacturing question: during the recession, why did the manufacturing industry suffer so much? I have an econ degree so I already know a little bit about it, but I really want to hear your take on the subject and what your opinion is of where the industry is now...I hope it helps you study :D
Haha, well I was thinking more along the lines of questions concerning the actual processes behind things, that tends to be what I study.
But I’ll give it a shot.
The recession, which we are still in, has vastly effected business and manufacturers for numerous reasons. Many manufacturers (Look at the automobile industry) suffered for reasons concerning poor money management etc. leading to bail outs etc….
In terms of Manufacturing itself, I think many businesses now are facing issues concerning productivity and efficiency. In north America, Most companies have their products manufactured else where in the world (i.e. China). This is simply because Factories in China have mastered the art of mass production. Manufacturers in north America simply cannot compete. The best option for Manufacturers who do not have the edge of mass production efficiency tends to be that they have an edge else ware (such as extremely high standards/ quality/ appearance)*. In order to succeed they need to have a unique quality…
*Not that products manufactured in China are low quality, but that Manufacturers elsewhere try to use there “Extreme quality and great engineering” as a advertising ploy
That being said, Many manufacturer’s suffered due to lack of Quality control, such as toyota’s Recall and too many similar products, Many car companies discontinued certain lines simply because they couldn’t afford to keep up…
My understanding of the recession is only very basic, so this is just a very brief over view of possible issues with manufacturing.
But thanks for the question!
ASK ME QUESTIONS ABOUT PERCEPTIONS AND THE HUMAN SENSES!
It will help me study.
Also feel free to bombard me with questions about the manufacturing industry.
I have exams in both those courses and need to study.
I’ve always felt that the best study method is explaining concepts to other people.
I promise that when my exams are done I’ll post things worth looking at.
I’ve just checked it out and its like totally all me. I love to design stuff.. and like this is my opportunity… its just my parents. Them having expectations of me being in the medical field… IDK what to do. People say follow your dreams and follow your heart, well its pretty hard when you’re on the spot and have to decide. All the “what ifs” keep popping in my head whether i should do it and what if i dont become successful, what if i fail. idk, this college stuff has been stressing me out way too much lately ;’(
Some Random advice from an Industrial Design (ID) Student:
(this might be a tad lengthy)
I absolutely adore the program I’m in, it’s a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. If you have the opportunity, and it’s what you really want, you should pursue it.
I also understand the concern of jobs / careers. Industrial design is a growing field, but it’s relatively new so finding a job can be stressful. It’s always good to have a fall back plan. You can still do a major in ID, but if you plan out your electives well you can do a minor that will help you in the future. (I’m doing a business minor, If ID doesn’t work out for me then I’m going to stay at school for an extra year and maybe pursue an business degree).
You could take biology as a minor, or do some research and find out what pre-requisites are needed for Med-school. I know some one who had a major in music for her bachelors, and took lots of chem and bio electives and then went to med school and became a doctor.
ALTERNATIVELY! There are lots of jobs in universal design, ergonomics and medical design, especially in the field of designing wheel chairs and prosthetic limbs. If you take a minor in Bio and major in ID, along with some engineering electives, you could pursue both a Design and Medical career.
You have plenty of options and you needn’t feel rushed, you have your whole life to figure out a career.
I hope you find what you are looking for.
Cheers and good luck!
80 notes (via -whaaaasssup)
Well here’s an old one….
This is a design project from last year, in which we had to create a cardboard dog house with was able to be packed flat, and easily put together without glue. It also held a 25 pound weight.
(Note: it is now functioning as a cat house in my basement.)

Happy Halloween (One day late).
(I was dressed like this almost all weekend.)
Side note: I occasionally wish that I could be a dead pirate everyday of the year.
but seeing as how most of this costume was based on my real wardrobe, I can sort of pull off dressing like a pirate quite regularly. Just not a zombie one. Too bad, I guess I’ll settle for plain pirate.
Technically I don’t have class until tomorrow but all of Industrial Design had a school meeting and we got to mingle with new students and meet our studio professors.
However, I did manage to find my PSYC class’s course outline on the school website and read through it (because I’m a keener, nurh) and noticed that we have to write an essay worth 15% of our overall mark. And I’m already freaking out because I haven’t written an essay in over a year and I dunno if I can do it…. Ah! In high school I sort of liked writing essays, I always got very good marks on them but I’m out of practice and University essays are nothing like high school and and and.
And I haven’t even had my first class yet, so I’m going to calm down.
I got to school super early before the meeting, did a few preparation errands and then;
I spent 3.5 hours chilling on a couch in the University center drawing and sketching, making lists and planning, while listening to industrial music from a dinky no-name MP3 player. I felt very content. I just need to find an agenda now so I can stay on track.
I’ve even started making notes on the first chapter of my Mass Productions text book.
Second year, here I come.
